Backlinks are links from other websites to yours. Google treats each one, roughly, as a citation: an independent site vouching that yours is worth pointing at. Twenty-five years after PageRank, with all the machine learning layered on top, that basic mechanism still decides most competitive rankings — when two sites have similar content, the one the web vouches for wins.
Which is why backlinks are also where the most money gets wasted and the most damage gets done. This is what actually counts, in plain terms.
Not all links are equal — most are worth nothing
| Link type | Worth | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Editorial link from a relevant, real site | High | Someone chose to cite you. This is the signal everything else imitates. |
| Real directory or association listing | Modest but real | Corroborates you exist; a normal part of any local profile |
| Footer credit on a site you built or sponsor | Modest, compounds | Real sites, permanent placement — a quiet asset for agencies and suppliers |
| Directory built only to sell listings | Nothing | Google recognises link farms; at volume they become a risk |
| Bought links, PBNs, “guest posts” on content mills | Negative | Explicitly against Google’s spam policies; penalties remove sites from results |
| Hidden links (white text, display:none) | Negative | Classic spam technique; discounted at best, penalised at worst |
A useful rule: if a link would still make sense with Google switched off — a customer might click it and arrive somewhere useful — it’s probably an asset. If its only imaginable purpose is to manipulate rankings, Google has spent two decades learning to ignore it, and you’re paying for nothing.
How a Malaysian SME actually earns links
- Be listable. Industry associations, chambers of commerce, Halal and other certification directories, supplier “where to buy” pages, franchise directories — real organisations you already belong to often link members and never got asked.
- Publish something only you can publish. Real prices is the classic example — pages that state what things actually cost get cited because almost nobody in the market will say. Original numbers, honest comparisons and genuinely useful tools earn links while generic “10 tips” posts never will.
- Convert relationships. Suppliers, partners, clients happy with your work, event organisers you’ve sponsored — a short, specific ask (“would you link our name in that mention?”) converts surprisingly often, because the mention already exists.
- Local press and communities. Malaysian business media and town-level news sites cover real stories: hires, openings, awards, data. One genuine story outranks fifty directory submissions.
- Accept that it’s slow. A real profile grows by handfuls per month. That’s what makes it defensible — competitors can copy your content in an afternoon; they can’t copy your citations.
What to never do
Don’t buy links, don’t join link exchanges, don’t hide links in templates or white text, and be suspicious of anyone selling “high DA backlinks” by the dozen — searching that phrase is how the spam finds you. Google’s spam policies are explicit, the penalties are real, and recovering a penalised domain costs far more than the links ever did. We’ve declined this work when asked, and we’d rather explain why than quietly take the money: a link scheme is a liability wearing a growth costume. For a real Malaysian example of what a bulk link package leaves behind, read the story of a pretty website with zero traffic.
Frequently asked questions
How many backlinks do I need to rank?
The honest answer: slightly more authority than whoever currently holds the position you want, on content that deserves it. In uncompetitive local niches that can be a few dozen real links; nationally it can be hundreds. It’s relative, which is why audits look at competitors — ours does exactly that in the authority layer of the SEO audit.
Do directory links still work in Malaysia?
Real ones, modestly, yes — they corroborate your business and feed the local layer (see our local SEO guide). Directories that exist only to sell listings do nothing. The test is whether a human might genuinely use the directory.
Is link building included in SEO packages?
In ours, local citations and directory listings are part of the Growth tier, and outreach link building sits in the Authority tier — the full breakdown is on the pricing page. For how links fit into the wider discipline, start with what SEO is.
