DR Compare

How do you stack up against your competitors?

A score on its own means little. Put your website next to up to three businesses you actually compete with and see who has the stronger backlink profile, and by how much.

What it measures

What is Domain Rating?

Domain Rating measures how strong a website’s backlink profile is compared with every other site in Ahrefs’ database, on a 100-point logarithmic scale. Higher is harder: moving from 20 to 30 is far easier than moving from 60 to 70.

It is one signal among many, not a Google ranking factor on its own — but it is a useful shorthand for how much authority a site has earned from links.

How to check your Domain Rating

  1. Enter the domainType your website address into the checker above, e.g. yourbusiness.com.my. No need for https:// or www.
  2. Read the score and bandYou get the DR score from 0 to 100 and the band it falls in, from “Just starting” to “Elite”.
  3. Compare with competitorsUse DR Compare to put your site next to up to three competitors and see the gap.
0–20Just starting

A new or rarely-linked site. Normal for a fresh business website.

21–40Growing

Some real links are coming in. Many established local businesses sit here.

41–60Established

A solid, well-linked site — often an older brand or an active publisher.

61–100Strong to elite

National brands, big media and long-running authorities.

What is a good Domain Rating? There is no single “good” number. A good DR is one that is close to, or higher than, the sites you compete with for the same searches. Compare yourself with the businesses you actually compete with, not with the biggest site in the country.

How it works

How Domain Rating is calculated

Domain Rating is a metric from Ahrefs. It looks at the backlink profile of a domain — the other websites that link to it — and turns it into one number from 0 to 100.

  • Referring domains, not raw links. DR counts unique domains linking to a site. Fifty links from one website count far less than one link each from fifty different websites.
  • Quality as well as quantity. A link from a site with a high DR passes more strength than a link from a site with a low DR.
  • Followed links only. Links marked nofollow do not count towards the score.
  • Relative and logarithmic. Every site is scored relative to all the others in Ahrefs’ database, so your DR can move even when your own links don’t.
DR vs UR. Domain Rating measures a whole domain. URL Rating (UR) measures the backlink strength of a single page. A strong page on a weaker domain can still rank well for the right search.
Why compare DR scores? Because DR is relative, it is most useful side by side. If the pages beating you on Google all have a much higher DR, earning more quality links is likely part of the answer. If they don’t, your content or technical SEO is the bigger lever.
DR vs DA

Domain Rating vs Domain Authority vs Authority Score

Searching for a domain authority checker? “Website authority” is measured differently by each SEO tool. They all use a 100-point scale, but the numbers are not interchangeable, so always compare like with like.

This checker

Domain Rating (DR)

Ahrefs · 0–100

Based on the number and strength of unique websites linking to a domain. Purely a measure of backlink strength.

Moz

Domain Authority (DA)

Moz · 1–100

Moz’s domain authority metric predicts how well a site might rank, using its own link index. Moz also offers Page Authority and a Spam Score.

Semrush

Authority Score (AS)

Semrush · 0–100

Combines backlink data with organic traffic and spam signals, so it reflects more than links alone.

None of these scores is used by Google. They are third-party estimates that help you judge link strength and compare websites. Google ranks pages, not domain scores.

Earn local mentions

Local press, partners and suppliers who already know and trust your work.

Claim links you’re owed

Make sure supplier pages and your own profiles point back to you, and fix broken links to your site.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Is this Domain Rating checker really free?

Yes. Enter a domain and you get its Domain Rating at no cost and with no sign-up. The score is provided by Ahrefs through their free Domain Rating data.

Does a higher Domain Rating mean I rank higher on Google?

Not directly. DR reflects backlink strength, which is one of many things Google weighs. A strong DR helps, but relevant content, a fast, well-structured site and local signals matter just as much — often more for local searches.

My Domain Rating is low. Is that a problem?

Not on its own, especially for a newer site. What matters is the trend and how you compare with your direct competitors. A low DR simply means there is room to earn more links — which is something you can work on steadily.

Is this a Domain Authority (DA) checker?

It checks Domain Rating, which is Ahrefs’ website authority metric. Domain Authority (DA) is a different score from Moz. Both measure link strength on a 100-point scale, but the numbers differ, so compare DR with DR and DA with DA.

How is Domain Rating calculated?

DR is based on the number of unique websites linking to a domain with followed links, and how strong those linking websites are. Scores are relative and logarithmic, so the higher you go, the harder each extra point is to earn.

How often should I check my Domain Rating?

Once a month is plenty. DR moves slowly, and because it is relative to every other site, small ups and downs are normal. Look at the trend over several months and how you compare with competitors.

Can I compare my Domain Rating with competitors?

Yes. Use DR Compare on this page to check your site against up to three competitors at once. You will see who is ahead and by how many points.

Can you help me improve it?

Yes. Send us your website and we will give you a free review — where your Domain Rating sits, who is ahead of you, and the realistic links worth earning. No obligation. Request a free review.
