Every few years someone declares SEO dead. This time the announcement comes with two new acronyms attached: AEO (Answer Engine Optimisation) and GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation). The pitch usually goes like this: “Google is finished, ChatGPT is the new search, and you need a completely different — and separately priced — kind of optimisation.”
If you want the plain-English version first, here is what AEO actually is, tested on real Malaysian searches.
Here’s the honest version: AI search is real, it is changing how people find businesses, and being visible in AI answers matters. But AEO and GEO are not replacements for SEO. They are outcomes of doing SEO properly. Anyone telling you otherwise is usually selling the same house with new paint.
Update, October 2026: we checked the latest “generic SEO is dead” claim against what Google, Microsoft and OpenAI publish about AI search. Read what they actually say.
What AEO and GEO actually mean
AEO — Answer Engine Optimisation — is about being the answer when someone asks a question directly: in Google’s AI Overviews, featured snippets, or voice assistants. It rewards content that answers real questions clearly, in plain language, near the top of the page.
GEO — Generative Engine Optimisation — is about being cited when AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity generate an answer. These tools choose their sources, and they overwhelmingly choose pages that are well-structured, factually specific, and already visible in traditional search.
Where AI engines get their answers from
This is the part the “SEO is dead” crowd skips. AI Overviews are built on Google’s own index — the same one SEO has always targeted. ChatGPT’s browsing and Perplexity lean heavily on pages that rank in conventional search results. Study after study finds the pages cited by AI answers correlate strongly with pages that already rank on page one.
In other words: if your site is invisible to Google, it is invisible to the machines too. There is no secret side door into ChatGPT’s answers that bypasses being a genuinely good, findable source.
What this looks like on Malaysian search results, today
This isn’t theoretical. In August 2026, searching “website maintenance malaysia” or “seo services malaysia” from Malaysia puts an AI Overview above the number-one organic result. The traditional top ranking now starts at position two.
Look at what those AI Overviews are built from and a pattern jumps out: they cite pages that publish real numbers. The maintenance answer is assembled almost entirely from pricing guides — pages stating actual ringgit ranges, tier by tier. Vendors who hide their prices behind “request a quote” simply do not appear in the answer, whatever they rank organically. The AI needs facts to assemble; a page with no facts has nothing to be quoted for.
That has an uncomfortable implication for the standard Malaysian agency playbook of hiding prices to force a sales call. In AI-mediated search, opacity doesn’t protect your margins — it removes you from the conversation. It’s also why we publish every price we charge, and why this site’s own cost guides exist.
What actually gets you cited by AI
- Direct answers near the top. AI engines lift concise, factual passages. Pages that bury the answer under 800 words of preamble don’t get quoted.
- Question-shaped content. Real FAQs, plain-language headings, and pages built around the questions customers actually ask.
- Structured data, for accuracy rather than tricks. Schema markup (LocalBusiness, Service) helps search engines read your business details correctly. Google says its AI features need no special markup, and it stopped showing FAQ rich results in May 2026, so be wary of anyone selling schema as an “AI hack”.
- Specifics over slogans. Prices, timelines, locations and honest trade-offs get cited. “Leading provider of innovative solutions” does not.
- Authority and consistency. Consistent business details, genuine reviews, and a track record of being referenced elsewhere.
- “What would you do differently from good SEO?” If the answer is a list of SEO fundamentals with new names, you have your answer.
- “Can you show me where AI engines cite your existing clients?” Measurable results beat theory.
- “Why is this priced separately from SEO?” If the honest answer is “because the acronym is new,” walk away.
Read that list again — it is a description of good SEO. Clear structure, real expertise, honest specifics, technical hygiene. The work that earns a Google ranking is the same work that earns an AI citation. That’s why we build it into every SEO plan we run rather than selling it as a separate service.
The gimmick test: questions to ask anyone selling AEO/GEO
What we recommend instead
Two things, in order:
1. Measure where you stand. Before paying anyone for “AI optimisation,” find out whether AI answers mention you today. Our AI Visibility Report (RM600, one-off) checks whether ChatGPT and Google’s AI Overviews cite your business for your most important searches, who they cite instead, and exactly what to fix — in plain language.
2. Do the real work. Structured content, direct answers (our on-page checklist covers the mechanics), schema, honest specifics, technical health, and the local layer AI answers lean on for “near me” questions — the fundamentals that feed both Google rankings and AI citations. That’s what our SEO retainers deliver monthly, with AI answer readiness built in at no extra charge.
Frequently asked questions
Is SEO really dead in 2026?
No. Search behaviour is shifting toward AI answers, but those answers are sourced from the same well-optimised pages SEO has always produced. SEO’s job description grew; it didn’t end.
Do I need to pay separately for AEO or GEO?
You shouldn’t need to. If your SEO provider is doing real work — structured content, schema, direct answers, technical health — AI visibility is a by-product. Paying twice for the same work is the gimmick.
Are AI Overviews already showing in Malaysia?
Yes — as of mid-2026 they sit above the organic results on many Malaysian service and pricing searches. The pages they cite are overwhelmingly ones that state concrete facts and prices. If your industry’s money keyword now has an AI Overview, the question is no longer whether to prepare for this, it’s whether the answer mentions you. The wider fundamentals are in our guide to how SEO works in Malaysia.
How do I know if ChatGPT mentions my business?
Ask it the questions your customers would ask, and see who it names. For a systematic version — across your key searches, with competitor share of voice and a fix list — that’s exactly what our AI Visibility Report covers.
