SEO Consultant in Malaysia: Talk to the Person Doing the Work
An SEO consultant is the person who does the work, not the person who manages the person who does the work. That is the whole distinction, and it is the reason the role exists separately from an agency.
We are a founder-led studio based in Alor Setar, Kedah, working with businesses across Malaysia. When you engage us for SEO you talk to the person making the decisions about your site — there is no account manager in between, because there is no layer to put one in.
RM800
Audit & action plan, one-off. Yours to use with anyone.
RM1,500/month
Ongoing work, from the Foundation retainer.
No account manager
You talk to whoever is making decisions about your site.
Engagements start at RM800 for a one-off audit and action plan, or RM1,500 a month for ongoing work. Both prices are published on our shop, not quoted case by case.
Ways to work
Four ways to work with a consultant
Most people arrive assuming SEO is a monthly retainer or nothing. It is not. These are the four shapes the work actually takes, and the first two are often all a business needs:
RM800 one-off
Audit & action plan
You suspect something is wrong but do not know what. You get a technical and keyword audit with a prioritised list of fixes — and you are free to hand that list to anyone, including your own developer.
RM600 one-off
AI Visibility Report
You want to know whether ChatGPT, Gemini and Google’s AI Overviews mention your business, and what they say when they do.
RM1,500 / month
Foundation retainer
A single-location business that needs steady, compounding work: content, on-page fixes, Google Business Profile, tracked keywords, monthly reporting.
RM3,000 / month
Growth retainer
More pages, more competitive terms, or more than one location. The same work at greater depth and volume.
The audit is deliberately sold on its own and is deliberately portable. A consultant who will only tell you what is wrong if you also hire them to fix it is selling access, not expertise.
The job
What an SEO consultant actually does
Stripped of vocabulary, the job is four things:
Find out why the site is not being found.
Usually this is unglamorous — pages with no target keyword, duplicate pages competing with each other, a title Google has no reason to trust. It is rarely the thing the owner expected.
Decide what is worth chasing.
Search volume without difficulty is a vanity number. The useful question is which terms you can realistically reach given the site you have today.
Do the work, or specify it precisely enough that someone else can.
Titles, structure, internal links, content, technical fixes.
Measure honestly, including when it is not working.
A report that only contains good news is not a report.
Choosing
Consultant, agency or freelancer?
All three can do good work. They fail in different ways, which is the more useful thing to know:
Freelancer
What you gain
Lowest cost, direct contact, flexible.
How it usually goes wrong
Capacity. One person with five clients handles an emergency for one of them at a time, and holidays are a single point of failure.
This is us
Consultant / small studio
What you gain
You deal with the person doing the work. Decisions are fast because there is nobody to escalate to.
How it usually goes wrong
Breadth. A small team cannot cover every discipline, and an honest one will tell you when something sits outside it.
Large agency
What you gain
Depth of specialism, capacity, and processes that survive staff turnover.
How it usually goes wrong
Distance. The person who sold you the work is often not the person doing it, and small accounts get junior attention.
If your site is small and your budget is modest, the distance problem in a large agency costs you more than the breadth problem in a small one. If you are running several brands in competitive categories, the reverse is true, and we will say so.
Pricing
How much does an SEO consultant cost in Malaysia?
Published rates across the Malaysian market run roughly RM500 to RM6,000 a month, with most SME retainers landing between RM1,200 and RM3,000. Standalone audit pricing is rarely published by Malaysian agencies at all, which is part of the problem.
Our own figures sit inside that range: RM800 for the audit, RM1,500 or RM3,000 a month for ongoing work. We publish them because a price that only appears after a discovery call is a price that changes depending on how much you look like you can pay.
RM500–6,000
a month: the published range across the Malaysian market
RM1,200–3,000
a month: where most SME retainers land
RM800 · RM1,500 · RM3,000

Be careful at the bottom of the market. Below roughly RM800 a month the arithmetic stops working — there are not enough hours in the budget to research, write and fix anything, so what usually gets delivered is a report.
Before you hire anyone
How to spot a real SEO expert
There is no licence for this work, which means the filtering is yours to do. These are the questions that separate the two groups fastest:
- “What will you actually do in month one?” A real answer names specific pages and specific fixes. A vague one names activities.
- “Can I see the audit before I commit to a retainer?” If the diagnosis is only available bundled with the treatment, ask why.
- “What would make you tell me not to hire you?” Anyone who has done this a while has turned work away. If they cannot name a case, they have not.
- “Who owns the content and the accounts?” The answer should be you, on every item, with no negotiation.
- “Show me a client whose results were disappointing.” Every honest practitioner has one. The answer tells you what happens when things go wrong.
And one hard rule: anyone guaranteeing a #1 ranking is either misinformed or lying. Nobody controls Google’s results, and the guarantee is normally attached to a term nobody searches for.
What we will not promise
- No ranking guarantees, for the reason above.
- No fixed timeline to page one. Realistically, meaningful movement takes three to six months and depends heavily on where the site starts.
- No claim that schema, llms.txt or any “AI trick” guarantees visibility. They help machines read a page correctly. They do not compel anyone to show it.
- No work for a direct competitor of an existing client in the same category and market.
Who this suits, and who it does not
It suits you if you run an established business with a real service to sell, you want to understand what is being done rather than receive a monthly PDF, and you are prepared to wait a quarter to see it work.
It does not suit you if you need enquiries this month — in which case Google Ads is the honest answer and we will tell you that — or if you want the cheapest possible monthly number, because at that end of the market you are buying activity rather than outcomes.

FAQ
Frequently asked
How much does an SEO consultant cost in Malaysia?
Across the Malaysian market, retainers run roughly RM500 to RM6,000 a month, with most SME engagements between RM1,200 and RM3,000. Standalone audit pricing is rarely published by Malaysian agencies at all, which is part of the problem. Our own published rates are RM800 for an audit and action plan, and RM1,500 or RM3,000 a month for ongoing work.
What is the difference between an SEO consultant and an SEO agency?
A consultant is the person doing the work; an agency is an organisation that employs people to do it. The practical difference is distance. With a consultant or small studio you speak to whoever is making decisions about your site. With a larger agency you usually get more capacity and specialism, but the person who sold you the work is often not the person doing it.
Can I hire an SEO consultant for a one-off audit instead of a monthly retainer?
Yes, and for many businesses it is the right starting point. We sell an audit and action plan at RM800 as a standalone engagement. The resulting list of fixes is yours to use however you like, including handing it to your own developer or another agency.
How long before SEO shows results?
Expect three to six months for meaningful movement, and longer in competitive categories. Anyone offering a firm date is guessing. Early signals — pages getting indexed, impressions rising, positions moving from page five to page two — usually appear sooner than enquiries do.
Do you guarantee first page rankings?
No, and you should be wary of anyone who does. Nobody controls Google’s results. Where a guarantee is offered it is normally attached to a keyword with little or no search volume, which is easy to rank for and worth nothing.
Do you work with businesses outside Kuala Lumpur?
Yes. We are based in Alor Setar, Kedah and work remotely with businesses throughout Malaysia, as well as in Singapore and Australia. Nothing about SEO requires an office visit, and we would rather spend the time on the work.
